The Hardest Update

Genealogists get so excited over things that "normal" people don't: An obituary. A death certificate. A tombstone. We can be an odd bunch.

We also get excited over the additions we get to make to our genealogy databases because of information we find in an obituary. On a death certificate, or on a tombstone. We do the genealogical happy dance. We post a status update on Facebook. We tweet. it's all good.

Except when it's not.  Yesterday I had to make the most difficult change to my genealogy database that I ever had to make.

Colleen, I am so sorry to hear that your father passed. You have my deepest condolences. I think you said in your post what we all feel. I waited several years before I would put my uncle's death date into my database, because I didn't want it to be "real". Again, I am so sorry.

I think losing my mom was the single most difficult event of my life. I am sad every time I hear someone's parent died. God bless.

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad. I lost my father on Dec 21 and I sat at my PC for a long time staring at my tree file before I could enter the date. You are right, it is the hardest update. My thoughts are with you in this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

Thank you all for your kind words, thoughts and prayers. My boss told me "It's very different when your second parent dies" and she was right. It's a very different feel.
